A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers is a book that I cannot even begin to describe. It it witty with its commentary, quick with its sensual humor, but also tender and makes you both feel for and recoil from our many character Dorothy. But before I get into that, let me summarize.
A Certain Hunger is about Dorothy Daniels, a food writer/critic who cannibalizes the greatest loves of her life. This book is written as a memoir as Dorothy now sits in prison. As for spoilers, I will leave them out of my review so that you can enjoy all the twists and turns of this book.
I adored this books for all that it was. I adored the commentary about sexuality, aging, and womanhood. Though I would not describe this book as a horror, it certainly has horrific elements so if that's something you enjoy (which I personally do) this is definitely the book for you! Though Dorothy is a rather flawed character and a meticulous psychopath, the Patrick Bateman we all wanted and needed, I find those characters to be the most interesting and almost sympathetic of them all. I found myself absolutely enthralled with Dorothy's story, even relating to it! If you like conversations about womanhood, feminism, and consumption, this is the book for you!
